In a fast paced, modern, ever changing world where focus can often be on academic or material achievements or gains, it's no wonder our child's and our self esteem can sometimes take a hit!
By learning to praise our child's (and our own!) character, effort and personal achievements, we can learn to build our self esteem and a growth mindset!
This board can open up positive conversations in the home that help to build self esteem. Use it daily, open up the conversation for your child/children, and don't be afraid to reflect on and add your own as a parent too,( it's good to role model!)
Use language that makes sense to you and your child/family. There's some stars included, and some blank, feel free to swap and learn and use more as you go and grow!
Whether being used at home or in school settings, the idea is that we move away from things like attendance and academic achievements alone, and look at each child in front of us- highlight positive character traits, i.e. kindness, empathy, honesty, bravery, determination, problem solving, etc. And you can acknowledge specific actions. "You were super patient with your sibling there! well done!" or ..." You were really thoughtful there, thank you!"
Examples of how to open it into conversation, you could use....
-A swap...
Instead of saying, "You're so clever"....
Try, "You worked really hard to solve that problem!" (This helps acknowledge the specific problem solving ability. )
-A child may be disheartened when they feel like they're failing or not quite grasping something, you could try a sentence like this...."I'm proud of your determination to keep trying", or "you kept going even when it was tricky" (This helps to focus on perseverance and effort.)
-Sentences such as "You learned an important lesson from that experience", can help to foster a sense of self improvement.
Laminated boards can be hung using sticky tac, magnets etc. I prefer using double sided hanging Velcro tape strips that you can pick up in local stores, hangs them securely and easy to remove. Wipe clean with cloth to last longer.
